Integrating Live Action and CG

Visual Effects Lab: Spring 2009

Course Introduction:

Expanding on processes and techniques from the previous semester, we continue to integrate these into a basic skill set essential for the visual effects artist. In time, these skills should evolve into practical methodologies and execution techniques. At this point you all have an understanding of Nuke and the basics of compositing, including but not limited to, color correction (matching the white, mid-grey and black points of an image as well as matching color values), keying, tracking, etc.

This semester we will focus on integrating cg elements with live-action footage. Last semester we had several short projects. This semester the final project will span several weeks and several separate "phases".
These "Phases" will include concept/story, previs, tests/proof of concept, time estimation/allocation, and finally the production phase.
In terms of the final project, and we are looking for a very finished product.

Course Objectives:

Integrating Live Action and CG

Improve work standards:
Standard: A means by which individuals are compared and judged.

Improve work conceptually:
Improve the conceptual quality of work.

Improve the technical execution of projects:
From the beginning through to completion, how well are the technical aspects of the project implemented?

The class will consist of a few simultaneous streams of activities:
1) Technique workshop: ongoing discussions and software demonstrations of techniques and methods useful in the making of visual effects.

2) Semester Project: This semester the final project will be assigned at week 4. There is no reason why you should not start with the conceptual phase now. Gather imagery, qt movies, start proof of concept tests, anything that may make your project run a bit more efficiently.

3) A series of readings and "technical notes" presented in the form of lectures and readings.

Components of Final Grade

1) 40% Charrettes (short assignments) / Participation
2) 40% Semester (final) Project / Participation
3) 20% Written Tests

100% Final Grade (factor in attendance)

Grades will be based on the effort and scope of the endeavor, depth of understanding, and overall completeness of each
project. Late or unfinished work will be marked down and may not be accepted.

This semester will be very challenging at times. It is important to keep the level of effort and push the limits of your abilities.
I am looking forward to a fun and rewarding semester.
