VFX Lab Fall 2011: 2DTracking / 2D Set Extension Project

Assignment Objective:

Shoot a background plate from at least three different angles (ie. establishing / wide shot, medium, detail / closeup) and create an edit.
Referencing a book or film for a theme, create a set from a live action shot with that theme in mind from these background plates.

Create the signage, billboards, videowall, backgrounds and any other necessary elements need to completely transform your footage into a shot for that particular world.
Track the signage, backgrounds, etc into your shot "plates", color correct them to match seamlessly with your backgrounds. After the previous steps have been accomplished you can then do an overall color grading to match the look and feel of the referenced book or film.

After you are satisfied with your edit, export those frames (remember padded with four "filename.0000.jpg") into Nuke.
Shoot your footage at 1920 x 1080 at 24 fps. Your final shots should not exceed 120 frames (each shot),

This project will be composited and color graded in Nuke.

Week 08 (Oct. 17 ): Final project done. Turn in a QT movie (compression motion jpeg A, size should be 1024 wide) with a shot breakdown at the begning of class, as well as posted on your blog.

Elements Required

Back Plate: Shoot footage of a Large Building or Signage.

Signage/billboards: Created in Illustrator, Photoshop Aftereffects (if animated) and comopsited in Nuke.

Set Extension: Extend / add to or change some of the elements / buildings / etc. in the background of the plates you have shot and track them into your comp.

Things to consider:

try to shoot the smoothest camera move possible!

Remember the Primary Compositing goals:

-matching the light direction, color and intensity in the background image.

-matching the black and white points

-matching the midtones

-matching the Focus or Depth of Field

-matching Lens Flares or interactive lighting

-matching Existing Grain

-Lighting: indirect, direct, backlit, interior vs. exterior. At the time of the greenscreen shoot it is very important to match the lighting conditions of your chosen background.

-Composition and framing. Camera position in relation to the subject and well as the background.

-Production value: Location, wardrobe, method, material, or stagecraft skill used in the production, general quality of the production.

-Footage should be shot HD in progressive mode (1080p).
